This time we will be serving in Fortaleza which is right on the coast. It is also much closer to the equator than where we were previously. It is tropical there. They have a rainy season and a dry season but the temperature stays about the same year round. My Portuguese is very rusty but I have been working on it. My biggest challenge is figuring out if I can take my sewing machine and projects so I can quilt.<br />
<br />
I made a bag to carry my sewing machine on board with me. I have packaged up five projects that I want to work on. I have come to realize that fabric is very dense and heavy. I have available two suitcases (up to 50 lbs. each) and a carry on plus one personal item. I am packing and weighing and then rethinking.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C2ODCHryOj4/XOlEZXrDqBI/AAAAAAAABnQ/n6KFO9Pw8B08JcI9Lu3-Ecj7kPwpkiwOACLcBGAs/s1600/Penny%2BStephenson%2527s%2BBags%2B%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C2ODCHryOj4/XOlEZXrDqBI/AAAAAAAABnQ/n6KFO9Pw8B08JcI9Lu3-Ecj7kPwpkiwOACLcBGAs/s320/Penny%2BStephenson%2527s%2BBags%2B%25281%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am also taking a bunch of yarn to knit. My main knitting project is a throw made out of hexagons. I figured that would be a long time project. It is called Persian Dreams.<br />
<br />
Since it has been forever since I last posted I figured it was time to resurrect the blog and see if I can remember how it is done.Pennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14820195733722301730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5115016792644267523.post-50764296280221613122013-12-13T20:17:00.001-07:002013-12-13T20:17:58.489-07:00What's on the NeedlesI am a pretty monogamous knitter. I have learned that if you don't work on a project it never gets finished. Deep, I know, but true, nevertheless. I finished the back of my sweater, cast on the front, did the ribbing and am now about 1 1/2" above the ribbing. Not very exciting to see. I did start another project.<br />
<br />
This is the beginnings of the Oaklet shawl. Normally I knit using the right hand flick method. I don't really throw but flick the yarn with my right index finger. I want to learn the left hand pick method aka continental knitting. I have watched numerous videos and practiced the technique on scrap yarn but never on a project. I decided that this would be a good project because there are a lot of knit stitches and an equal number of purl stitches with a few yarn overs thrown in for good measure.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MehIvKlTNH0/UqvNugwSf4I/AAAAAAAABf0/3aNygpAtkJc/s1600/oaklet+shawl.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MehIvKlTNH0/UqvNugwSf4I/AAAAAAAABf0/3aNygpAtkJc/s320/oaklet+shawl.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_691322971"></span><span id="goog_691322972"></span><br />
I got a good start on it but when I tried to knit and walk on the treadmill at the same time (3.2 mph) the whole project went south. So I did a do over. That is something that is cool about knitting. You can have do overs. In quilting if you cut something wrong you usually can't reuse your mistake. You have to start with new fabric. Anyway I ripped it all out and began again. From now on if I walk and knit at the same time it will be at a lower speed. Pennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14820195733722301730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5115016792644267523.post-38446864562597199982013-12-06T12:16:00.000-07:002013-12-06T12:16:16.935-07:00Starts and FitsI am working on my second <a href="http://www.blogger.com/">Customfit</a> sweater. My first was a classic V-Neck pull over which can be seen at the end of <a href="http://quilt2sr5.blogspot.com/2013/12/a-little-catching-up.html">this post</a>. I could hardly wait to start my second. I bought some wonderful Wollmeise DK yarn from Germany. I then decided that I wanted to do a classic crew neck cardigan based on the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cypress-cardigan">Cypress cardigan</a> in Amy Herzog's book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Knit-Flatter-Instructions-Youll-Sweaters/dp/1617690171/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386357162&sr=8-1&keywords=knit+to+flatter+amy+herzog">Knit to Flatter</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gFhtdRJugJ0/UqIfyDe85nI/AAAAAAAABfE/KcNRD-X2C_s/s1600/Wollmeise+dk+swatch.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gFhtdRJugJ0/UqIfyDe85nI/AAAAAAAABfE/KcNRD-X2C_s/s320/Wollmeise+dk+swatch.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I swatched up the yarn and got the information I needed. The cool thing about Customfit is that you don't have to hit a gauge. The program gives you a pattern based on your gauge and your measurements. I printed off the pattern and inserted the lace in the back. After about 10 inches I did not like how it was turning out. So I ripped it all out. I wish I had taken a picture of it before I did.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mMmgLZugO_4/UqIf7-fh86I/AAAAAAAABfM/gpIgZRT7meM/s1600/Hermiones+stitch+swatch.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mMmgLZugO_4/UqIf7-fh86I/AAAAAAAABfM/gpIgZRT7meM/s320/Hermiones+stitch+swatch.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I then thought about what I really would want to wear and all of my favorite sweaters are pull-overs. I also thought of the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hermiones-everyday-socks">Hermione's Everyday Socks</a> that I had made. I really liked the texture the pattern had made. I swatched that up and really liked it. So I began knitting the back. After about 10 inches I did not like how it was turning out. To me it was too busy or something. I really can't put my finger on it. So I ripped it back to the ribbing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zv2Y0NPZXKQ/UqIgGksLstI/AAAAAAAABfU/HMQizmHup8M/s1600/Hermiones+sweater.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zv2Y0NPZXKQ/UqIgGksLstI/AAAAAAAABfU/HMQizmHup8M/s320/Hermiones+sweater.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I was looking for something similar in the pattern and texture when I came across the dot stitch in a knit stitch pattern book. I swatched that up and really liked it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I2o_ZW_WrF0/UqIgS4qwviI/AAAAAAAABfc/Ct2y_w7fMRc/s1600/dot+stitch+swatch.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I2o_ZW_WrF0/UqIgS4qwviI/AAAAAAAABfc/Ct2y_w7fMRc/s320/dot+stitch+swatch.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am now about 10 inches up the back and I like it. I think this is what the sweater will be.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s3Ks2fF7zro/UqIgkSvq4OI/AAAAAAAABfk/pjG_M0kW2W8/s1600/Hermiones+sweater+simplified.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s3Ks2fF7zro/UqIgkSvq4OI/AAAAAAAABfk/pjG_M0kW2W8/s320/Hermiones+sweater+simplified.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

It is so nice to be here with all my stuff. Mostly my creative stuff. I can live without it but I am glad I don't have to anymore.<br />
<br />
I have a bit of an obsessive streak and right now knitting is my
interest. I am quilting quilts for others and that is fun but I mostly
prowl the web looking a yummy yarn. It is interesting that knitters talk
about their stash (some have a very impressive stash), and where they
are going to store it because they are running out of room, and how they
will never be able to use it all up in their life time. All of this is
so very much like quilters and their fabric. Some even talk about
sneaking it into the house. This is stuff I can relate to and it makes me smile although I think my stash is a total of 17 skeins. <br />
<br />
I want to share what I did while in Brazil. To have wonderful yarn I ordered some yarn and it was waiting for me when I made my quick trip home last March. When I went back I took about 16 skeins of yarn for socks. I figured that was something I could learn to do. So in my remaining 6 months I made 10 pairs of socks, one scarf and one cowl. It was really very fun.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UJ4RqivMYB0/UqIXBdypZjI/AAAAAAAABeg/SJAfrJIZqvI/s1600/page+1+socks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UJ4RqivMYB0/UqIXBdypZjI/AAAAAAAABeg/SJAfrJIZqvI/s400/page+1+socks.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I have found knitting is more portable than quilting, especially when I do all my quilting by machine. I know I can do stuff by hand, but basically I don't want to.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OmE1iqmfcfA/UqIYhjCs_rI/AAAAAAAABes/FceGxX8G268/s1600/page+2+socks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OmE1iqmfcfA/UqIYhjCs_rI/AAAAAAAABes/FceGxX8G268/s400/page+2+socks.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After making socks I was ready to move onto something else. Sweaters! In October I bought yarn and began a sweater. I was able to finish it in about a month. Yea! And it even fits.Well, the sleeves are a little short but I am not redoing it. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bWu6RIelUbI/UqIZOIBgmbI/AAAAAAAABe0/NCslWp3ze0k/s1600/Purple+vneck+sweater.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bWu6RIelUbI/UqIZOIBgmbI/AAAAAAAABe0/NCslWp3ze0k/s320/Purple+vneck+sweater.JPG" width="237" /></a></div>
So, if this blog becomes more of a knitting blog than a quilting blog, I am sorry. I think knitting has become attractive to me because it is something new to learn. There are new techniques to learn and master. After quilting for 30+ years so much of what I see now I think, "be there, done that." I went to a quilt show the other day and nothing sang to me. NOTHING! I couldn't believe it. I go into fabric shops and the same thing. About 10 years ago I took a hiatus from quilting for about a year and then I was ready to get back into it. Maybe the same thing will happen again. In the meantime forgive me if I dream about what I can cast on next.<br />

I was second to the oldest of seven children. I had an older brother and two brothers just under me. Then came three little girls. For the longest time I thought I had to compete with my brothers to show them I could do anything they could.<br />
<br />
With so many in a family there were hardly any leftovers. If you wanted something you had better eat it then because it would not be around later. When bananas came into the house we ate them then and there. There was not waiting around for them to get ripe. So I grew up knowing mostly green bananas. A ripe banana is just yucky.....it tastes too banana-y. I like my banana just a little past crunchy. None of the soft mushy stuff.<br />
<br />
With my Meniers disease I was put on a diuretic. The doctor told me I would need to eat more foods with potassium, bananas being a good source. I was complaining to one of the area docs about ripe bananas and he told me of a variety of banana here that doesn't ripen as fast as the variety we have in the states.<br />
<br />
The most common variety here and at home is called Nanica. They ripen quite quickly. The other variety that ripens slowly, doesn't ever get soft, and still retains that almost dry feel in the mouth is called Prata. Generally they are a little smaller than the Nanica and sort of flatter, not as round.<br />
<br />
The Pratas are on the left and Nanicas are on the right. I am in heaven. I can buy a bunch of bananas and they stay edible for me for a long time. I wish I had know about this sooner.<br />

I went to a hearing and balance center to figure out what was causing my vertigo. Turns out I have Meniers disease. New diet and supplements seemed to have taken care of the vertigo. I am very happy about that.<br />
<br />
I finished the Brazilian Butterflies quilt and gave it to the new baby. I had all the blocks sewn up so I put them together, added borders and then quilted it on my big machine. I was so happy to know that my skill was still there. Dang, that was fun. I love this picture of my mom holding the quilt with just her eyes peeking over.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8txNx-fDifY/UZpd731-6UI/AAAAAAAABdM/1kUNFRIHpVM/s1600/Brazilian+Butterflies+quilt2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8txNx-fDifY/UZpd731-6UI/AAAAAAAABdM/1kUNFRIHpVM/s320/Brazilian+Butterflies+quilt2.JPG" width="279" /></a></div>
One of the first things we did was go to Costco. I laughed at the things we had in our cart. Gotta have the basics.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B8f_6juOcVo/UZpdPoSLRpI/AAAAAAAABdE/mUHiJN9fwaE/s1600/costco.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B8f_6juOcVo/UZpdPoSLRpI/AAAAAAAABdE/mUHiJN9fwaE/s320/costco.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
We were able to meet out granddaughter. She was so cute and so much fun to hold and cuddle. I am so glad her mother takes a lot of pictures and shares them with us. We feel as if we are almost there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We took a family group photo. One is how we would like you to believe is how we normally are.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5xmjsPEaJBI/UZpetxIvuCI/AAAAAAAABdk/LxE_0g6C218/s1600/familygroup2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5xmjsPEaJBI/UZpetxIvuCI/AAAAAAAABdk/LxE_0g6C218/s320/familygroup2.jpg" width="236" /></a></div>
This one is the truth.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I_v2f8_BbeU/UZpe0EPhelI/AAAAAAAABds/znvxYReZI8I/s1600/familygroup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I_v2f8_BbeU/UZpe0EPhelI/AAAAAAAABds/znvxYReZI8I/s320/familygroup.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
One of my favorite pictures is of my dad, me, my son and my granddaughter. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sEfICx9Yilw/UZpe6R2NuQI/AAAAAAAABd0/INR4XRRn_uY/s1600/fatherdaughter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sEfICx9Yilw/UZpe6R2NuQI/AAAAAAAABd0/INR4XRRn_uY/s320/fatherdaughter.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
While we were home it snowed. I think the snow came to encourage us to go back to Brazil.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qy2T272LXSI/UZpeWjsd0cI/AAAAAAAABdU/iTPqQhr-XGA/s1600/snow.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qy2T272LXSI/UZpeWjsd0cI/AAAAAAAABdU/iTPqQhr-XGA/s320/snow.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I also picked up a bunch of yarn to knit socks, a scarf, and maybe a shawl. That has given me hours of entertainment. Will do a separate post on my knitting accomplishments.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rznV-0uMG9Q/UZpfefBBT0I/AAAAAAAABd8/Axe1tty5MBs/s1600/Hermione%27s+Everyday+Socks1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="243" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rznV-0uMG9Q/UZpfefBBT0I/AAAAAAAABd8/Axe1tty5MBs/s320/Hermione%27s+Everyday+Socks1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
We loaded our bags with peanut butter, chocolate chips, walnuts, crisco, deoderant and such to tide us over for six months. We gave our kids big giant hugs, our granddaughter lots of kisses and came back. It was fun to be home. <br />

The other day Mike and I went to the store (I think of it as our Super Target) for some groceries. When we walked in this new display was hard to miss.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k0DxTOR4PO4/UTeAijVX87I/AAAAAAAABbg/QBN28lB9V74/s1600/Easter+eggs+10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k0DxTOR4PO4/UTeAijVX87I/AAAAAAAABbg/QBN28lB9V74/s320/Easter+eggs+10.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
These are Easter eggs in various sizes. They appear to be about 6-8" tall and wrapped in a very colorful mylar wrapper. They are then attached to an overhead arch. See the blue and pink arch in the photo above?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IOljB8gcM9s/UTeAjobHEBI/AAAAAAAABb8/mvpVjd-x9vQ/s1600/Easter+eggs+12.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IOljB8gcM9s/UTeAjobHEBI/AAAAAAAABb8/mvpVjd-x9vQ/s320/Easter+eggs+12.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
They also attached the eggs to some frame to spell out Feliz Pascoa or Happy Easter.<br />

They also fashioned a rabbit. There were crates and crates of the eggs placed in the aisles.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EfjAEHz7n0o/UTeAj9lT08I/AAAAAAAABb0/PRPQioMi_Es/s1600/Easter+eggs+14.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EfjAEHz7n0o/UTeAj9lT08I/AAAAAAAABb0/PRPQioMi_Es/s320/Easter+eggs+14.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Here you see the barber pole style design. Someone took a red one already.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fv_CnM87grE/UTeAkdhQreI/AAAAAAAABcA/kT8fMf0HM0o/s1600/Easter+eggs+15.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fv_CnM87grE/UTeAkdhQreI/AAAAAAAABcA/kT8fMf0HM0o/s320/Easter+eggs+15.JPG" width="293" /></a></div>
Then down that aisle the eggs are suspended overhead forming a very long, very colorful tunnel. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2kpiA2_vK8k/UTeA2c0WGVI/AAAAAAAABcY/5QaXewmLtz0/s1600/Easter+eggs+16.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2kpiA2_vK8k/UTeA2c0WGVI/AAAAAAAABcY/5QaXewmLtz0/s320/Easter+eggs+16.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
All along cards are hanging which list the price of the eggs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iXVbQWLEGf0/UTeAieYaldI/AAAAAAAABbk/i20qabuOaRk/s1600/Easter+eggs+11+-+Copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iXVbQWLEGf0/UTeAieYaldI/AAAAAAAABbk/i20qabuOaRk/s320/Easter+eggs+11+-+Copy.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is one of the higher end eggs. That is about a $30 egg. All over were signs stating that you could buy your Easter eggs and pay them off in 10 payments with no interest charged. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qSSn5HcLbvw/UTeA2fL1goI/AAAAAAAABcs/6_d2cnlcI_w/s1600/Easter+eggs+17.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qSSn5HcLbvw/UTeA2fL1goI/AAAAAAAABcs/6_d2cnlcI_w/s320/Easter+eggs+17.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The tunnel goes on for quite a ways. I found some Kit Kat candy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-swCfPpnEikY/UTeA27zn3zI/AAAAAAAABco/TbmvZR4V4pE/s1600/Easter+eggs+18.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-swCfPpnEikY/UTeA27zn3zI/AAAAAAAABco/TbmvZR4V4pE/s320/Easter+eggs+18.JPG" width="286" /></a></div>
After the tunnel we turned down the aisle and noticed bars suspended at regular intervals with eggs attached.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TrCmOWIAmEg/UTeA3CRAh0I/AAAAAAAABck/QLIw1gwCw10/s1600/Easter+eggs+19.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TrCmOWIAmEg/UTeA3CRAh0I/AAAAAAAABck/QLIw1gwCw10/s320/Easter+eggs+19.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
All in all it made for some very colorful shopping. There is an area that has bulk food items for a good price. I wanted to make some homemade bread and needed some gluten. So while we were in the central city we went to the top of the bank and I got to have another 5 minutes over looking the city.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7lGMAZTizXM/UR5AcNQ-O0I/AAAAAAAABaM/Vo6PUfKm7eU/s1600/SP+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7lGMAZTizXM/UR5AcNQ-O0I/AAAAAAAABaM/Vo6PUfKm7eU/s320/SP+3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It still amazes me how big this city is.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZE3fp7KeYC4/UR5Ab-PExlI/AAAAAAAABaA/u6zzSWhtFf0/s1600/SP+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZE3fp7KeYC4/UR5Ab-PExlI/AAAAAAAABaA/u6zzSWhtFf0/s320/SP+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It just goes on and on almost as far as the eye can see.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YZ3tUQLdNys/UR5AcarQbiI/AAAAAAAABaY/Zpne0OjEEYI/s1600/SP+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YZ3tUQLdNys/UR5AcarQbiI/AAAAAAAABaY/Zpne0OjEEYI/s320/SP+4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It was a sunny, clear day and visibility was very good.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RHcFbZd6fe8/UR5Ab56J6fI/AAAAAAAABaE/WHV7xIJOtWA/s1600/SP+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RHcFbZd6fe8/UR5Ab56J6fI/AAAAAAAABaE/WHV7xIJOtWA/s320/SP+1.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I am glad Mike was able to see this glorious sight.Pennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14820195733722301730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5115016792644267523.post-18674169776891172862013-02-15T06:52:00.000-07:002013-02-15T06:52:55.072-07:00This is ALL Judy's faultI am currently on a church service mission in Brazil for The <a href="http://mormon.org/">Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints</a>. I have been here for 10 months and will be here another 8. I am an avid quilter but quilting is just not happening here. Fabric is very expensive and the project I brought is not working out. <br />
<br />
I have been reading <a href="http://www.patchworktimes.com/">Judy's blog</a> for several years to see what she was doing with quilts and the knitting and chickens were an pleasant and often amusing side story. Then one day she posted <a href="http://www.patchworktimes.com/2013/01/17/my-socks-and-getting-started-knitting-socks/">this entry</a>. I got to thinking that maybe I could knit socks in my down time. So being the obsessive person that I am I began researching socks and yarn and accessories. Goodness. There is a lot of knitting stuff out there.<br />
<br />
I went to a local yarn store and picked up some unmarked knitting needles about the size of a pencil and some acrylic worsted weight yarn (for $4.50) and began to learn knitting. I had learned how as a kid but didn't continue. So with the help of Youtube I learned I had been doing it wrong. I then learned how to drop stitches unintentionally, how to do unintended yarn overs and other great tricks. Through a lot of study I have also learned what was causing the problems and how to eliminate them.<br />
<br />
I found a great cache of abandoned yarn (former missionaries that went home) and one pair of DPNs! OH JOY! I could learn how to knit in the round. The DPNs are a size 5. My first knitty project was a hat for my new and very first grandchild. See <a href="http://quilt2sr5.blogspot.com/2013/01/she-is-here.html">previous post </a>for lots of gushing. I'll spare you that here. I need a darning needle to finish it up.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_S4Z5GAcnDk/UR46FlfnnRI/AAAAAAAABY4/ItKyKW5DSC8/s1600/Baby+beanie.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_S4Z5GAcnDk/UR46FlfnnRI/AAAAAAAABY4/ItKyKW5DSC8/s320/Baby+beanie.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I also found a pair of size 3 1/2 straight needles and have been using that to practice different stitches. That is a lot of fun and adds great variety to my knitting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9aecSYnWEuk/UR46FjQ7UeI/AAAAAAAABY8/dVmV_tLJhrk/s1600/Stitch+sampler.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="286" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9aecSYnWEuk/UR46FjQ7UeI/AAAAAAAABY8/dVmV_tLJhrk/s320/Stitch+sampler.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
There are five different patterns. See the big holes? I learned wrapping the thread 360 degrees is not what yo means. The smaller holes above the big ones are what is intended.<br /><br />
Right now I am doing the Simple Skyp Socks on my DPNs and I think it is sport weight yarn. This is merely a learning piece and when I finish it I will unravel it and try something different.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e21q6NnV3g8/UR46FjKaDII/AAAAAAAABZA/1Lw27oHpanw/s1600/Skyp+sock+sample.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e21q6NnV3g8/UR46FjKaDII/AAAAAAAABZA/1Lw27oHpanw/s320/Skyp+sock+sample.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We are going home to Utah the middle of March to meet the new baby. We will be there for two weeks. I have ordered some yummy sock yarn, Hiya Hiya circs, a DPN needle set (sock size) and a couple of books. All of this I will bring back with me. So I have three weeks until I can fondle my yarn. Three weeks to practice continental knitting and different patterns until I can cast on a REAL sock. I am looking forward to that along with playing with the baby.<br />
<br />
All of this has come in handy lately because my vertigo has returned. It is not as severe as the first time but enough to have kept me home for almost two weeks. I can knit and not have any problems because I do not have to move my head. Head movement about does me in. So I want to say thank you Judy. It has been a life saver. <br />
<br />

My first grandchild arrived on Jan. 15. She weighted 8 lbs. 2 oz. And it looks like she has the red/copper color hair that runs in the family. Her name is Laurel. Of course I HAVE to share a picture.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uM27Y_jkvM0/UPgUVoX8DTI/AAAAAAAABX4/tqR1YY3bqEI/s1600/002First+pic.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uM27Y_jkvM0/UPgUVoX8DTI/AAAAAAAABX4/tqR1YY3bqEI/s320/002First+pic.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Pictures will have to hold me over until the temple closes for maintenance in March. Then we are going to go home for two weeks. I will have to shower her with kisses and hugs to tide her over for six months. <br />
<br />
Admit it. She is a cutie. Want to see another picture? OK. Just one more. Here is one with her eyes open.<br />
I am so looking forward to kissing those chubby cheeks. <br />

Temple Square is so lit up during the Christmas season that many make the trek there to take in the lights. It is truly a sight to behold. I was curious to see what they did here.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nal6tnxghBo/UNSIxOr80sI/AAAAAAAABW4/yCdZ2o_pQ6g/s1600/nativitytemple.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nal6tnxghBo/UNSIxOr80sI/AAAAAAAABW4/yCdZ2o_pQ6g/s320/nativitytemple.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is it. There are some lights wrapped around the stable but no where else. Just this humble little display. I suppose that is appropriate.<br />
<br />
When we were out walking we noticed this planter that had been filled with poinsettias. We are in summer here and these plants love it. I think of how I had to shield the ones I would buy from the cold just to get them home. We did see a poinsettia tree the other day but I didn't have my camera with me. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Zgr14KM2oKw/UNSIylrIXvI/AAAAAAAABXA/V676hZzEljY/s1600/poinsettas.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Zgr14KM2oKw/UNSIylrIXvI/AAAAAAAABXA/V676hZzEljY/s320/poinsettas.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I must admit that with the really warm (if not hot) weather I have a hard time wrapping my head around Christmas. I think that is a good thing since I am not yearning to be home. It just doesn't seem like Christmas, therefore it is not.<br />
<br />
I have been talking to the natives and it seems that the average person does not spend as much money on Christmas here as they do in the states. The stores do not have Christmas decorations for sale. We couldn't find any wrapping paper. Imagine Walmart without that stuff. I think the people here are just making due. The Christmas gifts that I have seen (being marketed) are boxes of food staples; rice, beans, sugar, flour, etc. Not doing any Christmas shopping has certainly made my life easier.<br />
<br />
I went looking for a calendar for my Christmas gift. I found a lot of them that were imported from the states. $35. I decided I would print off months from my computer and use that until I go home for a short visit in March. I am not that desperate for a calender with pictures of quilts or doggies. After checking out stuff we decided to forgo presents this year. Heck, that really isn't any different from any other year.Pennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14820195733722301730noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5115016792644267523.post-86701362597824791042012-12-21T03:24:00.001-07:002012-12-21T03:24:36.940-07:00PanettoneAround the middle of November these big displays started showing up in all the grocery stores. The displays had boxes and boxes of panettone.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hglVIZDlJfw/UNQ0g8xECvI/AAAAAAAABVo/SjLxT4YIchU/s1600/panettone2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hglVIZDlJfw/UNQ0g8xECvI/AAAAAAAABVo/SjLxT4YIchU/s320/panettone2.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This display was at the entrance of the store. There were walls and walls of these cakes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RNtM3yWgDpo/UNQ0fkX4w8I/AAAAAAAABVg/pol2zmOYJGM/s1600/panettone1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RNtM3yWgDpo/UNQ0fkX4w8I/AAAAAAAABVg/pol2zmOYJGM/s320/panettone1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There are many different kinds of panettone. Some with bits of dried fruit, some with chocolate chips, some with filling of Dulce de Leite, some with a filling of chocolate pudding. They range in price from around R$5 to R$35.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dApXT7KOnvY/UNQ0hnvg2SI/AAAAAAAABVw/mUNMTgUIlqo/s1600/panettone3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dApXT7KOnvY/UNQ0hnvg2SI/AAAAAAAABVw/mUNMTgUIlqo/s320/panettone3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
One day I was talking (very limited) to a sister in the temple and I asked her what they were. They are Christmas Cakes. She said they were very good. She was surprised to know that they were not available in the States and that I had never heard of them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AkHM5188rWY/UNQ0iYyQy5I/AAAAAAAABV4/Im_E2sI883w/s1600/panettone4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AkHM5188rWY/UNQ0iYyQy5I/AAAAAAAABV4/Im_E2sI883w/s320/panettone4.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The next week she brought me one. It is really more like a sweet bread than a cake. They are very tasty. Better than fruit cake as we know it. I later sampled one with Dulce de Leite filling. Now that was a slice of heaven.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Jegzi-P1InQ/UNQ0jGRa90I/AAAAAAAABWA/7vxeNeplJ70/s1600/panettone5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Jegzi-P1InQ/UNQ0jGRa90I/AAAAAAAABWA/7vxeNeplJ70/s320/panettone5.JPG" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
It is now a few days before Christmas and most of these cakes are gone. I am amazed at how many are sold. Definitely, they are a very popular Christmas treat. Pennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14820195733722301730noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5115016792644267523.post-12757886498391612932012-12-21T02:26:00.000-07:002012-12-21T02:26:16.354-07:00Thanksgiving Brazialian StyleI figure I had better write about Thanksgiving since Christmas is almost upon us. The North American missionary couples usually get together and have a Thanksgiving dinner. This year it was held the Monday after the traditional holiday. Due to circumstances that got really out of control we went from six couples to 17 couples. We had Brazilians, Portuguese and Americans. It truly was an international affair. Mike and I were in charge of organizing the dinner. We took on the meat assignment. We found turkeys are very expensive. They are smaller than what I am used to and according to the locals are dry. They ran about $3.50 a pound.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q_X3saNAIZI/ULzQfDZeh-I/AAAAAAAABSk/W2PBFvkOjtw/s1600/thanksgiving16.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q_X3saNAIZI/ULzQfDZeh-I/AAAAAAAABSk/W2PBFvkOjtw/s320/thanksgiving16.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It was recommended that we use Chester. What the heck is a Chester? After a little research I learned that a Chester is a carefully bred type of chicken that has a very large breast and large thighs. These are available around Christmas and they are more expensive than turkey. We found we could buy roasted chickens for the same price as frozen turkey, but all the work was done. So we used those.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ehkrz6q-mCc/ULzQd--LIJI/AAAAAAAABSc/d8dw028sqMo/s1600/thanksgiving15.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ehkrz6q-mCc/ULzQd--LIJI/AAAAAAAABSc/d8dw028sqMo/s320/thanksgiving15.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The tables were decorated in a fall theme. It is hard to see the chili plant in the center with folded napkin turkeys and some nut cups. <br />

<br />
Everyone brought a dish to share. We had the usual mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, sweet potato casserole, homemade rolls, and of course pumpkin pie. The sweet potato casserole was a big hit with the Brazilians. They wanted to know how it was made. We had empanades, a strawberry/chocolate pudding, and a chocolate cake. No one went away hungry.<br />

<br />
It really was a fun evening. I met new people and connected with others who I don't see often.<br />

It was a lot of work as all big dinners are but it was a success. Everyone visited with each other and a good time was had by all.Pennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14820195733722301730noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5115016792644267523.post-35511941998005682332012-12-03T09:54:00.000-07:002012-12-03T09:54:32.216-07:00The Fragrant WalkThe end of spring and the beginning of summer is here. Gardenias are in bloom and are so wonderful.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-triHM9_vEbs/ULzPP3PzSHI/AAAAAAAABRs/SHy2RxYlnqs/s1600/gardenia.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-triHM9_vEbs/ULzPP3PzSHI/AAAAAAAABRs/SHy2RxYlnqs/s320/gardenia.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There is a hedge that grows all along the sidewalk that runs the length of the temple. It is over 100 ft. long. As we walk along the fragrance is absolutely wonderful. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ExF1xYzoATc/ULzPReGCq4I/AAAAAAAABR0/O_t7vr6t3qk/s1600/gardenia2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ExF1xYzoATc/ULzPReGCq4I/AAAAAAAABR0/O_t7vr6t3qk/s320/gardenia2.JPG" width="240" /> </a></div>
<br />
<br />
These flowers remind us of Mike's mom. She would of loved this. She was a gardener and loved flowers.<br />
It is fun to see what nature has to show off. One friend was looking for artificial flowers and another was looking for beads to make necklaces. While we were making our way there we passed a bank that has an observation deck. Noting that the line was almost nonexistent we decided to go up and have a look. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Hj9d0vJrqis/UJhGqFIOddI/AAAAAAAABQo/E4edu_3fKJg/s1600/SPObservation+94.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Hj9d0vJrqis/UJhGqFIOddI/AAAAAAAABQo/E4edu_3fKJg/s320/SPObservation+94.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the building from a little ways off. Only 5 people are allowed on the deck at a time and observers are given five minutes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XHsXzBeVgVs/UJhGreMvxbI/AAAAAAAABQ4/BIL7LZ_9uvU/s1600/SPObservation+96.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XHsXzBeVgVs/UJhGreMvxbI/AAAAAAAABQ4/BIL7LZ_9uvU/s320/SPObservation+96.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Luckily there were just five of us. We were surprised that our Brazilian guide had never been up to the top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YzXDhVGb4To/UJhGb6jFYvI/AAAAAAAABPQ/fx1e1DYMLf4/s1600/SPObservation+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YzXDhVGb4To/UJhGb6jFYvI/AAAAAAAABPQ/fx1e1DYMLf4/s320/SPObservation+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Oh my heavens. What a view. It was breathtaking.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kE1b8JumkZ0/UJhGcmUC2AI/AAAAAAAABPY/0VRmEYe17hw/s1600/SPObservation+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kE1b8JumkZ0/UJhGcmUC2AI/AAAAAAAABPY/0VRmEYe17hw/s320/SPObservation+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I just started taking pictures as I walked around the deck. You could only go one way.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_ykBaPP2RS8/UJhGdSvtThI/AAAAAAAABPg/9Hmqi9gV1Zg/s1600/SPObservation+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_ykBaPP2RS8/UJhGdSvtThI/AAAAAAAABPg/9Hmqi9gV1Zg/s320/SPObservation+3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I loved the colors of these buildings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-psDa9inH1cE/UJhGeIsoMeI/AAAAAAAABPo/EtxKog3IHus/s1600/SPObservation+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-psDa9inH1cE/UJhGeIsoMeI/AAAAAAAABPo/EtxKog3IHus/s320/SPObservation+4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So many buildings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qwzAcHcVk9g/UJhGe9F9tYI/AAAAAAAABPw/nOyFglZ8NpY/s1600/SPObservation+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qwzAcHcVk9g/UJhGe9F9tYI/AAAAAAAABPw/nOyFglZ8NpY/s320/SPObservation+5.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This side had some green trees.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZBTIH4Ap-V8/UJhGlFplubI/AAAAAAAABP4/dEBQEAHSZE0/s1600/SPObservation+6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZBTIH4Ap-V8/UJhGlFplubI/AAAAAAAABP4/dEBQEAHSZE0/s320/SPObservation+6.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see some higher hills in the background and a very large roadway in the foreground.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KBpOz684Smk/UJhGmMeOvFI/AAAAAAAABQA/XaV_j-Jxn7Y/s1600/SPObservation+7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KBpOz684Smk/UJhGmMeOvFI/AAAAAAAABQA/XaV_j-Jxn7Y/s320/SPObservation+7.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the <a href="http://quilt2sr5.blogspot.com/2012/08/mercado-municipal.html">Municipal Mercado</a> that I wrote about earlier. (The light brick building with the arched windows.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6_s4Uwgi768/UJhGm3B-OtI/AAAAAAAABQI/w2ETxgMkDXo/s1600/SPObservation+8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6_s4Uwgi768/UJhGm3B-OtI/AAAAAAAABQI/w2ETxgMkDXo/s320/SPObservation+8.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This street I found very interesting because it is so straight. There are not many straight streets around here.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sudv7dfbfhc/UJhGnR-8hdI/AAAAAAAABQQ/WtsPG1Q9XL4/s1600/SPObservation+91.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sudv7dfbfhc/UJhGnR-8hdI/AAAAAAAABQQ/WtsPG1Q9XL4/s320/SPObservation+91.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I thought the top of this building was interesting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CTtb014Yj3g/UJhGoPvST7I/AAAAAAAABQY/PNTSttSanz8/s1600/SPObservation+92.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CTtb014Yj3g/UJhGoPvST7I/AAAAAAAABQY/PNTSttSanz8/s320/SPObservation+92.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
And then I was back around to where I started. It was a very wonderful experience. Now I need to get Mike to come and take a look. I think it is well worth the effort.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PZM3yO26EpQ/UJhGpILbMiI/AAAAAAAABQg/asEVZ1IK9Mg/s1600/SPObservation+93.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PZM3yO26EpQ/UJhGpILbMiI/AAAAAAAABQg/asEVZ1IK9Mg/s320/SPObservation+93.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The city is gearing up for the Christmas season. Santa is mounted on the street light poles. The big red blob in the lower left was a giant Santa that was unveiled that morning. I suppose the Christmas season has begun. They don't have Thanksgiving to hold them back.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2d_5zY7IH6o/UJhGq-9qlmI/AAAAAAAABQw/DqrlnKDW1oI/s1600/SPObservation+95.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2d_5zY7IH6o/UJhGq-9qlmI/AAAAAAAABQw/DqrlnKDW1oI/s320/SPObservation+95.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

Imagine. The spell checker says that is wrong. While on our two week break back in August Mike and I visited this park. It is Sao Paulo's version of Central Park in NYC. It is a large park with several museums, lots of traffic free roads, trees, lakes and of course lots of people. Here is a main road. The bicycle path is to the right and the walking/running path is to the left.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UE3SIJtkymE/UJBU7KU6GmI/AAAAAAAABNs/_BU4G0BHuW0/s1600/Ib+park+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UE3SIJtkymE/UJBU7KU6GmI/AAAAAAAABNs/_BU4G0BHuW0/s320/Ib+park+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
As the day wore on vendors set up their wares along the roads. We went on a Saturday and it was very busy. There are several lakes. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-T_FEM3KkHo4/UJBU8q_JhPI/AAAAAAAABNw/gEDn9lNj-sM/s1600/Ib+park+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-T_FEM3KkHo4/UJBU8q_JhPI/AAAAAAAABNw/gEDn9lNj-sM/s320/Ib+park+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the same lake as above but from a different side. You can see buildings in the distance.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rp4qu_rIy4Y/UJBU9tTl1gI/AAAAAAAABN8/OZ01AMB45ZQ/s1600/Ib+park+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rp4qu_rIy4Y/UJBU9tTl1gI/AAAAAAAABN8/OZ01AMB45ZQ/s320/Ib+park+3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There were lots of trees. In this spot there was a walking/running path that wound around the trees, doubling back and forth. It made for a long trail but not in a lot of acreage.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GQRp8C3AYDY/UJBU_dCJ59I/AAAAAAAABOE/kdYP8ZygE44/s1600/Ib+park+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GQRp8C3AYDY/UJBU_dCJ59I/AAAAAAAABOE/kdYP8ZygE44/s320/Ib+park+4.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This is bamboo growing on both sides of the road. There were a couple of soccer fields that were filled with very competitive young men. Sorry, not picture.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-70e_I8w1cHU/UJBVAMRs8tI/AAAAAAAABOM/vu8_BEL_tZk/s1600/Ib+park+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-70e_I8w1cHU/UJBVAMRs8tI/AAAAAAAABOM/vu8_BEL_tZk/s320/Ib+park+5.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
There were black swans in the lake. These people are feeding them bread crumbs. I did not see any white swans but there were ducks. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pHmmVJ6n_cM/UJBVBpSA8GI/AAAAAAAABOU/CSGDmrEdOOk/s1600/Ib+park+6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pHmmVJ6n_cM/UJBVBpSA8GI/AAAAAAAABOU/CSGDmrEdOOk/s320/Ib+park+6.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is looking back to where I took the first picture of the lake. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lL6YR96AYf0/UJBVCS6D8WI/AAAAAAAABOc/Jwk9HLdL8ng/s1600/Ib+park+7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lL6YR96AYf0/UJBVCS6D8WI/AAAAAAAABOc/Jwk9HLdL8ng/s320/Ib+park+7.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
We spent a couple of hours walking around the park and people watching. Brazilians love their dogs. We saw a lot of fat dogs but the dogs and their owners seemed to be happy to be out and about on a warm clear day. <br />
<br />
We have been told that during the Christmas season they have an impressive water fountain display in one of the lakes. I look forward to seeing that. Stay tuned.<br />
<br />Pennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14820195733722301730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5115016792644267523.post-48755656952359580352012-10-27T06:45:00.000-06:002012-10-30T16:27:16.381-06:00Not an Enrichment meetingA Brazilian friend from the MTC invited the American sisters to a Relief Society enrichment meeting, but we don't call it enrichment meeting anymore. This was the Sao Paulo Vila Sonia ward. It is not the ward that meets next to the temple but about a mile away. The sisters were making things for Christmas. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1a72zFEM05Y/UIvUJ8hI_BI/AAAAAAAABMw/N02q6rs85G0/s1600/oct+enrichment+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1a72zFEM05Y/UIvUJ8hI_BI/AAAAAAAABMw/N02q6rs85G0/s320/oct+enrichment+4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
They were making napkin rings and beaded netting that they place over pitchers of juice, salads, desserts, etc to keep the bugs off the food. (See previous post about bugs.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jKxIuUvi5m8/UIvUKnmpwmI/AAAAAAAABM4/ofwK6NpPwAc/s1600/oct+enrichment+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jKxIuUvi5m8/UIvUKnmpwmI/AAAAAAAABM4/ofwK6NpPwAc/s320/oct+enrichment+5.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We learned how to do the beading and it was really quite simple.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ue1UJdMj7QM/UIqYR2dhX1I/AAAAAAAABLI/dIBGuVDpEM8/s1600/oct+enrichment+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="258" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ue1UJdMj7QM/UIqYR2dhX1I/AAAAAAAABLI/dIBGuVDpEM8/s320/oct+enrichment+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see there were quite a few people were there. The sister in the coral shirt had just returned from a three week trip to the U.S. The sister next to her speaks wonderful English. She helped us with our Portuguese and our beading.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4o0W1jqCPFs/UIqYSx4ZDtI/AAAAAAAABLQ/EtYRB2l9Cio/s1600/oct+enrichment+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4o0W1jqCPFs/UIqYSx4ZDtI/AAAAAAAABLQ/EtYRB2l9Cio/s320/oct+enrichment+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We shared lots of laughs and great conversation. It was a very enjoyable evening. The next meeting is scheduled for the end of November and we are invited. I wonder what they will be doing at that one.<br />

air conditioner is not hooked up yet so to cool off we must open the
windows. Along with some cooler air coming in we get visitors. I was sitting on the sofa this morning when Mike came in and pointed up to the ceiling. Oh my goodness. We had a visitor.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TNq6oClKrIQ/UIvTETi5yrI/AAAAAAAABMg/4bIyb_t65qQ/s1600/moth+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="177" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TNq6oClKrIQ/UIvTETi5yrI/AAAAAAAABMg/4bIyb_t65qQ/s320/moth+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This moth was huge. Here is a shot with our fly swatter for reference. It's wing span was about 5 inches. My friend Ann would of loved it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L95qNVZe7FY/UIvTFS6ItMI/AAAAAAAABMo/Kq2V0YR-RuU/s1600/moth+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L95qNVZe7FY/UIvTFS6ItMI/AAAAAAAABMo/Kq2V0YR-RuU/s320/moth+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Bug lovers will be happy to know that we did not kill the beast...ur....bug. Mike gently coaxed it out the window. So much for the unexpected visitor.<br />

</div>
The other day we were on line looking at images of the Sao Paulo temple and noticed someone had posted a recent picture of a pineapple. What? I didn't recall seeing a pineapple plant. When we went to the temple that day sure enough there was a pineapple growing right in front. I have walked by those plants twice a day and never noticed.<br />
<br />
Can you see the little pineapple in the upper center-left? And yes, it really is that pink.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q9Mda8dXOPU/UIqWomQSUvI/AAAAAAAABK4/OLjAKlzNILE/s1600/pineapple+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q9Mda8dXOPU/UIqWomQSUvI/AAAAAAAABK4/OLjAKlzNILE/s320/pineapple+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I wonder if is ornamental pineapple or the real deal. I am keeping my eye on this.<br />

To be truthful I hate to write and I have been reading a lot plus I have won over 600 games in a row of free cell. (I said I would be truthful) Anyway someone asked if I was all right since I hadn't written for awhile. To that I say Sorrrrrrrry.<br />
<br />
With the Presidential election campaigning going on in the United States I am glad I am not there. The news slant and campaign ads just make me angry. I do get to vote absentee by way of the internet. How cool is that?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TQULfagLBBo/UIqR_5XVaKI/AAAAAAAABJ8/MUFkqYJBDRM/s1600/election+poster+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="184" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TQULfagLBBo/UIqR_5XVaKI/AAAAAAAABJ8/MUFkqYJBDRM/s320/election+poster+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is Brazil it is election time also. It is not national election time but the races are local. Sao Paulo is deciding on a mayor and some city council people. It is interesting because voting in Brazil is obligatory. When a person votes they are given a card that certifies that and many employers require proof of voting. From what I understand a voter must return to the place where they originally registered to vote. There is no absentee voting either. Election day is a Sunday and people make it a family day often returning to their original homes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jRABM7-mgiY/UIqSAoIT3fI/AAAAAAAABKE/U2zrqjCCSyA/s1600/election+poster+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="175" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jRABM7-mgiY/UIqSAoIT3fI/AAAAAAAABKE/U2zrqjCCSyA/s320/election+poster+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Look at the signs and notice anything different? Yup, those numbers are larger than the names. Something that I find interesting is that voting is done by numbers and not names. On the ballot the candidates are listed by number and not by name. I was told that here in the city voting is done on computers. You click on a number and a page opens up with a picture of the candidate and the name. If that is the one you want you choose to cast your vote for him or if not you close that window.<br />
<br />
The primary was held two weeks ago and this Sunday is the general because no one received over 51%. Someone said there are lots and lots of different parties here. Not like the US's main two. When the primary was held the streets were littered with business card size flyers from the candidates with their number and picture. I guess they wanted something a voter could easily take along into the voting booth.<br />
<br />Pennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14820195733722301730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5115016792644267523.post-23698343473149739612012-09-17T18:43:00.000-06:002012-10-27T06:46:10.742-06:00You Knew I Couldn't Live Without ItI now have a sewing area in my apartment. You really knew it would happen sooner rather than later. I found a sewing machine sitting in the laundry room upstairs. I don't go there very often and hadn't noticed it but Mike pointed it out. I hauled it downstairs which took some effort. I weighted it to see how heavy it was. Thirty-five pounds. This is definitely not a portable sewing machine. It is a Singer 288. I did a little research and I think it was made sometime around the 1970's. It didn't have a needle but a friend gave me a couple. They worked. The presser foot also has been taped on somehow. I don't dare mess with that for fear it will fall completely apart. When I sew the foot wobbles a little from side to side. It makes it kind of hard to get a straight seam but the stitch is wonderful.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-66cjLyqNVPc/UFfAzd-tEZI/AAAAAAAABI4/ZeH2y9Iy4_s/s1600/Sewing+room+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-66cjLyqNVPc/UFfAzd-tEZI/AAAAAAAABI4/ZeH2y9Iy4_s/s320/Sewing+room+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I had it here for several weeks and would set it up on the little dining table but would have to move it for meals. Not a whole lot of sewing was happening. The other day a bit of inspiration hit. I could set it up on the little desk in the bedroom.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QM0gOC0gCxY/UFfAyatC6WI/AAAAAAAABIw/bWCynLGu3cc/s1600/Sewing+room+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QM0gOC0gCxY/UFfAyatC6WI/AAAAAAAABIw/bWCynLGu3cc/s320/Sewing+room+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I could also put the cutting mat on the ironing board and I could use the bedspread for my design board.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZswgJmwFY0k/UFfA0XcagLI/AAAAAAAABJA/dGjV96W9154/s1600/Sewing+room+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZswgJmwFY0k/UFfA0XcagLI/AAAAAAAABJA/dGjV96W9154/s320/Sewing+room+3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Now I go in and sew several wonky butterflies a day. I get so much more done when I don't have to keep lifting that anchor. I am making a butterfly baby quilt for my first grandchild. It is a girl and will be born in January. I wasn't feeling the love on the applique project so I looked around for a project that would work with what I have. I settled on the <a href="http://mrsschmenkmanquilts.wordpress.com/butterfly-block-tutorial/">wonky butterflies</a> that everyone was making a year or so ago. I don't know if my daughter-in-law will like this but I know I do. I think I am going to call it Brazilian Butterflies. I have 16 out of 63 blocks completed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o3tOYbZJ-ps/UFfA1cdEU6I/AAAAAAAABJI/jB2crDOZvrI/s1600/Sewing+room+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="202" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o3tOYbZJ-ps/UFfA1cdEU6I/AAAAAAAABJI/jB2crDOZvrI/s320/Sewing+room+4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is fun.<br />

Here is a statue for the first European explorer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k2NO0BzNZfI/UDfGTGJJu8I/AAAAAAAABGc/CGUMPtDsKHQ/s1600/beach10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k2NO0BzNZfI/UDfGTGJJu8I/AAAAAAAABGc/CGUMPtDsKHQ/s320/beach10.JPG" width="251" /></a></div>
<br />The beach is at least 100 yards wide and about 4 miles long. The sand is a very fine white sand.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yicVtULoczw/UDfGUatppfI/AAAAAAAABGk/T9RwWRzgibs/s1600/beach11.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yicVtULoczw/UDfGUatppfI/AAAAAAAABGk/T9RwWRzgibs/s320/beach11.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There are a few palm trees which I suspect were planted. They are located up near the park that runs along the main road. The beach was very clean. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N-dhGfrG9_o/UDfGValfDyI/AAAAAAAABGs/rj1T9GUMZ-M/s1600/beach12.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N-dhGfrG9_o/UDfGValfDyI/AAAAAAAABGs/rj1T9GUMZ-M/s320/beach12.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Off in the distance I could see many cargo ships anchored waiting for their turn in the port.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eYxpxL9Rnok/UDfGWMbG75I/AAAAAAAABG0/v8Gr2hexYsk/s1600/beach13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="172" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eYxpxL9Rnok/UDfGWMbG75I/AAAAAAAABG0/v8Gr2hexYsk/s320/beach13.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
All the housing is built just on the other side of the main road. On the summer weekends the city about doubles in size. Many Paulistas love to leave the big city and go to the beach.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hpEmRSpj7RQ/UDfGWyM6X6I/AAAAAAAABG8/4ZoobSuulLo/s1600/beach14.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hpEmRSpj7RQ/UDfGWyM6X6I/AAAAAAAABG8/4ZoobSuulLo/s320/beach14.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If you look real close you will see people in red shirts. They were teaching kids how to surf. The waves were small and not very impressive.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bG-UgW0Z9Hc/UDfGX7QuOxI/AAAAAAAABHE/BdNxA0Xddgs/s1600/beach15.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="245" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bG-UgW0Z9Hc/UDfGX7QuOxI/AAAAAAAABHE/BdNxA0Xddgs/s320/beach15.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The beach was not very busy since it is still winter here and a weekday. Although it was about 80 degrees and a beautiful day.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-njGOb9sAJdE/UDfGY7ahk0I/AAAAAAAABHM/OBlaS0OcRYU/s1600/beach16.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-njGOb9sAJdE/UDfGY7ahk0I/AAAAAAAABHM/OBlaS0OcRYU/s320/beach16.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There are clubs that you can join and they go out and stake out some territory and provide chairs, umbrellas and carts that sell food. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lrOFtiMNVJQ/UDfGZmvwMvI/AAAAAAAABHU/VQYDEvxjIVs/s1600/beach17.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="202" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lrOFtiMNVJQ/UDfGZmvwMvI/AAAAAAAABHU/VQYDEvxjIVs/s320/beach17.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I didn't take off my shoes to dip my toe in the ocean. I figured a shoe in the ocean would be good enough. I didn't want to have to deal with sandy feet. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8MeOOHvif9c/UDfGaU3vceI/AAAAAAAABHc/D6q9hgbACwE/s1600/beach18.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8MeOOHvif9c/UDfGaU3vceI/AAAAAAAABHc/D6q9hgbACwE/s320/beach18.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There were fountains in the park area all along the way. This one has a surfer with water splashing up around him.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jVxfZyzvLlo/UDfGbG8uttI/AAAAAAAABHk/O-rOJeU-FRM/s1600/beach19.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jVxfZyzvLlo/UDfGbG8uttI/AAAAAAAABHk/O-rOJeU-FRM/s320/beach19.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This statue honors the Brazilian who introduced surfing to Brazil. Now that is a long board.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fepFU5WKVac/UDfGcCJOgcI/AAAAAAAABHs/jtSGjKknNCM/s1600/beach20.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fepFU5WKVac/UDfGcCJOgcI/AAAAAAAABHs/jtSGjKknNCM/s320/beach20.JPG" width="233" /></a></div>
<br />
This city is very bike friendly. This bike trail runs the length of the beach and there were lots of people using it. All through the city there were bike paths. I think I would be tempted to come back and rent a bike and go riding up and down the beaches. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bsnMKQ1BJnM/UDfGgm7MUVI/AAAAAAAABH0/XKelKIU1XVQ/s1600/beach21.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bsnMKQ1BJnM/UDfGgm7MUVI/AAAAAAAABH0/XKelKIU1XVQ/s320/beach21.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
When Mike was on his mission he worked in Santos a couple of times. One time he lived on the 17th floor in an apartment that overlooked the beach. It was memorable because it was leaning. While driving down the road he spotted the building and I quickly snapped a picture out the car window. He was surprised to see the building still standing after 40 plus years. Maybe they went in and shored up the foundation. The lean is hard to see in this picture but believe me, it was doing some leaning. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xw_6Iz7z_5A/UDfGhwJcO-I/AAAAAAAABH8/Hv6_OUOhsIk/s1600/beach22.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xw_6Iz7z_5A/UDfGhwJcO-I/AAAAAAAABH8/Hv6_OUOhsIk/s320/beach22.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The drive home was interesting since the road climbs up about 2,000 feet in elevation and we had lots of trucks leaving the port to keep us company. It was pretty slow going until we topped out and then it opened up. It took us about one hour to get to Santos and about two hours to get home. But the drive was beautiful and the whole experience was totally worth it.Pennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14820195733722301730noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5115016792644267523.post-65150546709103429542012-08-24T12:20:00.000-06:002012-08-24T12:20:09.701-06:00Santos - Orchid LandBB had read about a place called Orchidario. This was about the total of the orchid display. I wonder when orchid season is.<br />

This is a water fountain with a lady holding a horn that spews water upward. Many birds were gathered around it. A black hummingbird was resting on the palm fronds and taking a bath while we watched. He sure looked like he was enjoying it.<br />

After this quiet interlude we headed off for the beach.Pennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14820195733722301730noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5115016792644267523.post-42098620546040970342012-08-24T11:56:00.001-06:002012-08-24T11:56:22.896-06:00Santos - Old TownI am going to divide our trip to Santos into three seperate posts. It will be easier to read.<br />
<br />
On Thursday we took a break from Sao Paulo with another missionary couple and went to Santos. You have seen them before. We really enjoy their company. We went together and rented a car and drove to Santos which is about 60 miles away. It is on the coast and has the largest port in South America. Santos was very important in Brazil's early history. A lot of goods went in and out of Santos and they still do.<br />
<br />
We started our visit in Old Town which is very quaint with buildings built usually in the mid 1800's.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hQOZaOLtV9E/UDe4ire7e5I/AAAAAAAABBA/l6-l-ftRrpE/s1600/Old+town+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hQOZaOLtV9E/UDe4ire7e5I/AAAAAAAABBA/l6-l-ftRrpE/s320/Old+town+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There is a church that was constructed in 1641.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aERAj_joqoA/UDe4g_w7wuI/AAAAAAAABAw/bTgkUjH4vxY/s1600/Old+town+1.2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aERAj_joqoA/UDe4g_w7wuI/AAAAAAAABAw/bTgkUjH4vxY/s320/Old+town+1.2.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The outside is so unassuming but the inside was spectacular.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1wT4Vg0Akgk/UDe5iC1rRAI/AAAAAAAABCA/SnQJqthMAWA/s1600/church+ceiling.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1wT4Vg0Akgk/UDe5iC1rRAI/AAAAAAAABCA/SnQJqthMAWA/s320/church+ceiling.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The ceilings had paintings on them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tAhMDEj44HQ/UDe5jsSwExI/AAAAAAAABCI/KY0K12MRXWI/s1600/church+ceiling2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tAhMDEj44HQ/UDe5jsSwExI/AAAAAAAABCI/KY0K12MRXWI/s320/church+ceiling2.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The walls were adorned with statuary. The whole was very impressive.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lCYTJkt6Tig/UDe5lcwgRQI/AAAAAAAABCQ/vDAzaTkdM-k/s1600/church+interior.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lCYTJkt6Tig/UDe5lcwgRQI/AAAAAAAABCQ/vDAzaTkdM-k/s320/church+interior.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Next door to that was a Victorian train station. Dr. B remembers taking a train out of this station while on his mission.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RTUOPRgoTOM/UDe4iA-x9TI/AAAAAAAABA4/LEp7YGVivuc/s1600/Old+town+1.3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RTUOPRgoTOM/UDe4iA-x9TI/AAAAAAAABA4/LEp7YGVivuc/s320/Old+town+1.3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Mike and I looking very touristy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SYHYOdy7Kx4/UDe4nNxFLfI/AAAAAAAABBo/vOG_Vu92LRo/s1600/Old+town+train+station.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SYHYOdy7Kx4/UDe4nNxFLfI/AAAAAAAABBo/vOG_Vu92LRo/s320/Old+town+train+station.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We walked down the street to the Coffee Exchange building.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T7YzTSsiwQE/UDe5p2kXVHI/AAAAAAAABCo/VXjLbasWp5U/s1600/coffee+house2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T7YzTSsiwQE/UDe5p2kXVHI/AAAAAAAABCo/VXjLbasWp5U/s320/coffee+house2.JPG" width="241" /></a></div>
<br />
Right in front of that building is a street that leads out of the port. Truck after truck with containers filled the street.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v7XT6ryR5us/UDe6ezwcz2I/AAAAAAAABCw/2uRWqQq5edM/s1600/road+from+port.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v7XT6ryR5us/UDe6ezwcz2I/AAAAAAAABCw/2uRWqQq5edM/s320/road+from+port.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The back side of the building and the entrance to the Coffee Exchange museum.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WKL0C30njRo/UDe5nNUkc_I/AAAAAAAABCY/dAkr3wEj58o/s1600/coffee+house+back+side.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WKL0C30njRo/UDe5nNUkc_I/AAAAAAAABCY/dAkr3wEj58o/s320/coffee+house+back+side.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This museum had a fantastic stainedglass ceiling. There are no pictures because although photographs were allowed, flash was not. I don't know how to turn off my flash on my camera. I am from the generation that only restaurants had menus. This building is across the street from the Coffee Exchange house.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O3X-OBFJjh8/UDe4o8AwXDI/AAAAAAAABB4/jXaRzALKv1w/s1600/Old+townr4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O3X-OBFJjh8/UDe4o8AwXDI/AAAAAAAABB4/jXaRzALKv1w/s320/Old+townr4.JPG" width="287" /></a></div>
<br />
We tracked down a small road way that was closed to cars. This area had several buildings that had been restored.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lp5SNOBB0No/UDe4mYrUYFI/AAAAAAAABBg/Y2liqZFY9WE/s1600/Old+town+restored.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lp5SNOBB0No/UDe4mYrUYFI/AAAAAAAABBg/Y2liqZFY9WE/s320/Old+town+restored.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This blue tile building was undergoing restoration.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wJWe9AIxtfk/UDe7aXeadGI/AAAAAAAABC4/3WrTxFd1eXo/s1600/blue+tile+house.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wJWe9AIxtfk/UDe7aXeadGI/AAAAAAAABC4/3WrTxFd1eXo/s320/blue+tile+house.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This street had several interesting buildings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1PPc1mwgUNM/UDe4jmaOA5I/AAAAAAAABBI/oJO8PxXPejs/s1600/Old+town+houses.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1PPc1mwgUNM/UDe4jmaOA5I/AAAAAAAABBI/oJO8PxXPejs/s320/Old+town+houses.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
See anything unusual?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vhnigQUio0c/UDe4krQdfTI/AAAAAAAABBQ/Pdn5foZebcc/s1600/Old+town+needs+restoring.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vhnigQUio0c/UDe4krQdfTI/AAAAAAAABBQ/Pdn5foZebcc/s320/Old+town+needs+restoring.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There were weeds and trees growing out of this facade.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aPX9qpofGfo/UDe4lVmVj_I/AAAAAAAABBY/4RGyyQwtvOQ/s1600/Old+town+needs+restoring2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aPX9qpofGfo/UDe4lVmVj_I/AAAAAAAABBY/4RGyyQwtvOQ/s320/Old+town+needs+restoring2.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The blue you can see through the windows is sky. The building had no roof. So this shows you need to weed your building even if it is not occupied.<br />
<br />
Walking back to the car I noticed all the houses built up the side of the hill. A very steep hill I might add. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3A_XU7VO3fc/UDe4oAh71SI/AAAAAAAABBw/pO9ONQIB7vc/s1600/Old+town+view+of+hill+side.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3A_XU7VO3fc/UDe4oAh71SI/AAAAAAAABBw/pO9ONQIB7vc/s320/Old+town+view+of+hill+side.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We then headed into the newer section of town.<br />

Here in our apartment building I believe we are the only couple to hang around. Since not many people are here maintenance is scheduled during that time. Yesterday they took the door off to refinish it. It was back in place around 9 p.m.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zU_IJNBrQtM/UDS9tYgiNRI/AAAAAAAAA_o/aXqyomGI23M/s1600/Home+happenings+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zU_IJNBrQtM/UDS9tYgiNRI/AAAAAAAAA_o/aXqyomGI23M/s320/Home+happenings+2.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
They brought in air conditioners. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bcobhrlFGAI/UDS9uslTA2I/AAAAAAAAA_w/jjrib-9N4bk/s1600/Home+happenings+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bcobhrlFGAI/UDS9uslTA2I/AAAAAAAAA_w/jjrib-9N4bk/s320/Home+happenings+3.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
They hung them in the ceilings. One in the living room and one in the bedroom. They still need to finish up the trim work. When it gets hot and humid I will be very grateful for these.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8fbkdN9R584/UDS9v4aoadI/AAAAAAAAA_4/MLeUqEV6OT0/s1600/Home+happenings+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8fbkdN9R584/UDS9v4aoadI/AAAAAAAAA_4/MLeUqEV6OT0/s320/Home+happenings+4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
While Mike was doing battle with the IT guys to get our internet back (we are still having some issues) I was able to get a quilt cut out. It is a baby quilt. My daughter-in-law is expecting our first grandchild. It is a girl. She is going to get a very bright wonky butterfly quilt because that is what I can make with the stash I brought with me. It was great fun using a rotary cutter again.<br />

<br />
Tomorrow they are going to turn off the power for most of the day. We are planning to go to Santos.<br />
<br />
I want to show you what one of the temple missionaries brought us before she left town. Empanades. They were very tasty. <br />
